Dark and Dingy in need of a facelift

My living room was wallpapered when it was my mothers house back in the 80's. The room is so dark and dingy and in desperate need of an update. If it had a nice fresh coat of paint instead of that old wallpaper and threw out the old carpet it would be so much brighter and more appealing. I would like to not be embarrassed to have company over anymore.
