This is the living room that nobody wants to "live" in. The walls were peeling, punctured, drab and dingy when we moved in a decade ago, and they've never been painted since. On top of the last owner's grime on the walls, we have raised 3 small children who have added new layers of grime and marker "artwork" to the bare walls. I dream of making this into a warm and comfortable place for us grown-ups to relax in, with warm-chocolate hues on the walls and no children's graffiti allowed.

Is this for real? Do people really live like this. I mean even if they are broke they can do something to make it look clean and organized. It's one of the worse I've ever seen.
Submitted by Sara Furch | 10/29/2009
Yes, we are real, and yes it is difficult to live this way. This is what happens when there's a job loss and major recovery to be made afterward. Money goes to staying afloat while "peripherals" like paint go on the back burner. :(

Paint is your best friend. Quick, cheap, and mostly painless. If you don't win, paint it anyway...I'l help you pick colors :)
Submitted by Sara Furch | 11/4/2009
Thanks so mucyh, Christine! I'd love your help with colors... if I can get over my embarrassment of having guests over who might see the "before"walls.

Good luck on winning...we can always use some extra help now and then.

Voted. I gotta say, I recently painted our baby's room with that stuff, and it's remarkably good paint. The pigment is bonded to the base on a molecular level (thus the low v.o.c.'s), so it's really easy to apply evenly and has a crazy even, deep density. Never thought I'd rave about a paint, but...

Dear Sara, I hope you win your paint job!!! The quality time I have seen you spend with your children is worth far more than how your house looks. It's tough haveing three little ones under 4 yo. Love, Donna

The light-switch photo was somehow cropped upon entry--what was submitted was a life-size marker drawing of a monster that my kids added to the wall.
